2024

During a week dubbed "China Week" by House leadership in September 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed 25 laws related to U.S policy towards China. This legislative initiative focused on technology, economic sanctions, and human rights issues in an attempt to counter the numerous challenges posed by China. The bipartisan legislative push included regulations on Chinese-made DJI drones, the restriction of federal partnerships with specific Chinese biotech companies, and restrictions on the number of Chinese components allowed in electric vehicles; another bill opened the door to the closure of Hong Kong's trade offices in the United States.

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular press conference that China firmly opposes the “discriminatory” measures taken against Chinese companies in the bills passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Mao emphasized that “the U.S. should abandon biases, genuinely respect the market and trade rules, stop advancing these bills, and cease the suppression of Chinese companies under various pretexts.” She called for a fair and non-discriminatory trading environment for enterprises from all countries.

Summary

Overall, "China Week" shows an increasing emphasis on limiting China's influence. The passage of 25 bills on a single subject during an otherwise gridlocked Congress indicates a strong bipartisan majority in favor of a more hawkish U.S. stance towards China.

China's response to "China Week" raises serious questions about its economic standing in view of recently suggested restrictions aimed at Chinese businesses. Beijing's harsh criticism may be a reflection of its concern that these actions would not only make it more difficult for China to access the vital U.S. market and meet its goals in important areas like biotechnology and electric cars. Because China may respond aggressively to the US measures passed during “China Week,” these new legislative developments may worsen the already-existing economic conflict between the two countries.
