Staff at the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) have informed at least two exhibitors at the annual Hong Kong Book Fair not to sell certain titles, citing “complaints” regarding sensitive content. Banned books include "The Psychology of Imprisonment" and "Words from Within the Prison" by former lawmaker, social worker, and activist Shiu Ka Chun, as well as "The Last Faith," "Turbulence" and "2047 Nights" by journalist Allan Au Ka Lun. While what constitutes “sensitive” content remains largely ambiguous, the titles in question address political topics that have garnered attention from government censors in the past. The HKTDC defended its decision by stating that all book fair exhibitors must comply with all Hong Kong laws, including the National Security Law.

Summary

The recent restrictions imposed on exhibitors at the Hong Kong Book Fair highlight a steady shift in the city's political landscape. The banning of books by former lawmakers and journalists, coupled with censorship of broadly defined "sensitive" content, indicates an intensifying effort to control public discourse and suppress dissenting narratives. These decisions, justified under the National Security Law, demonstrate the continuous erosion of Hong Kong's autonomy, freedom of press, and speech. The ambiguity surrounding what constitutes prohibited material has created an atmosphere of uncertainty, leading to self-censorship among writers, publishers, and cultural institutions.

As waves of censorship continue to impact not only the publishing industry but also public libraries and schools, Hong Kong's reputation as a hub for free expression and intellectual exchange is increasingly at risk. The long-term implications of this censorship extend far beyond the immediate impact on book sales. Instead, it could potentially lead to long-term detrimental effects on Hong Kong's literary and academic communities, stifling critical discussions and open debate and discouraging the production and distribution of works that challenge conventional pro-establishment narratives.
